Taxi or VTC in Barcelona: the real differences

In Barcelona, the key difference between a taxi and a VTC is how you hire it. A taxi can be hailed on the street or taken from a rank and charges regulated metered fares. A VTC (a Spanish private vehicle with driver licence) must be booked in advance and usually has a fixed price agreed before the ride.

Both are professional, regulated passenger services. The question is not which one is better overall, but which one suits each journey. If you are visiting Barcelona for the first time, this guide explains the practical differences so you know what to expect.

Two regulated models with different rules

Taxis are a public service licensed by the city or the metropolitan authority. In the Barcelona area, fares are set by the administration and are the same for every cab: the final price depends on distance, time and any applicable supplements.

A VTC runs under a different type of authorisation. Catalan regulations require the service to be booked in advance: a VTC cannot cruise looking for passengers, cannot pick up people who wave it down and cannot wait at taxi ranks. You and the company agree the service before it starts.

In practice, a VTC works like a pre-booked chauffeur or private hire car. Autolux holds its own VTC licences, which is why every service we run is booked ahead.

How you book each one

Taxi

• Hail it on the street when the green light is on.
• Find ranks at the airport, the train stations and many points around the city.
• Call one by phone or through an app.

VTC

• Always booked in advance: online, through the app, by phone or by email.
• The driver waits for you at the agreed place and time.
• At the airport, the driver meets you in the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name.

Taxis are very convenient when a journey comes up unexpectedly. A VTC fits better when you already know the time and place: a flight, a meeting, a dinner or an event.

How the price is worked out

This is the difference passengers notice most.

In a taxi, the price is calculated by the meter under the current fares. It can change with traffic, time of day and supplements such as the airport one. The system is transparent and regulated, but you do not always know the exact amount until you arrive.

With a VTC, the price is agreed when you book. At Autolux we confirm a fixed price before the service: there is no meter, and the amount does not change because of a traffic jam on the ring road. For companies that need to plan costs, or for visitors who want to know exactly what they will pay in an unfamiliar city, that predictability matters.

The vehicle and the driver

A taxi is whichever cab is available at that moment. The vehicles are approved and suitable for the job, but you do not choose them.

With a booked VTC you can choose the category. At Autolux we work with:

• Top: long wheelbase Mercedes S-Class.
• Electric: Tesla Model S.
• Top-Van: minivan for up to 8 passengers.

A taxi is usually the best choice for:
